DIY projects for your porch

In the south of our beautiful country, a front porch is a staple. Everyone knows that. However, even if you’re not in the south, a front porch can be an amazingly appealing asset of the house. Buyers love them, and what’s there not to love really? Name a nicer thing than sitting on a porch in a sunset with a cold drink in your hand. So, naturally, people love decorating their porches. However, even the best among us sometimes get to a halt. If you’ve run out of ideas, or if you’re just in a search for something new and refreshing to up your porch a notch, you’re in the right place. And the best thing about these is that you can do all of them by yourself. Therefore, here are the best DIY projects for your porch.

Ideas for small porches

We all love huge porches, but it doesn’t have to be big to be appealing. If you incorporate a few design changes, even a small porch can offer much more than you might think. The trick with these is to draw the eyes up. Choose the eye-catching color and paint the ceiling of your porch in it. The famous haint blue is your best bet, but you can go another way too. Just choose a light color, as this will bring a sense of space.

Get a new floor as one of the new DIY projects for your porch. Sometimes existing small porches can look more like concrete steps than like an area in which you want to relax. Build over the concrete and create a small deck area. Go for a bold and classic stain of the wood. This will give it a finished look which is exactly what you want.

Put some plants on it. We often seem to remember just how big of a difference some plants can make. The green color is suiting to the eyes, and you can get a whole pallet with different flowers. The possibilities are endless. All that is left to do on your small porch now is to call some friends over. This may be a great opportunity to connect with new neighbors.

Update your porch railings

If you want to make the most bang for your buck, be sure to consider putting a new railing on your porch. If you do it properly and choose unique ones, it can add an incredible amount of charm. However, there are some rules that you should stick to when choosing railings.

Firstly, be sure to stay authentic. The idea here is to match the style of railings with the style of the house. For instance, if you have a Victorian-style home, be sure not to put Art-Deco railings on it. On the other hand, if changing the whole thing is out of your budget, a fresh coat or two of spray paint can do wonders also.

Add some details

One of the easiest ways to make a porch feel like a room is by adding details. This is both inexpensive and very easy. Now, we’re not saying that moving your antique furniture to the porch won’t make a difference. But it will make a much bigger impact if you accompany it with lots of tiny details. Here’s what you can do.

Add some shutters. You can buy shutters in all possible materials and color schemes. And they’re a relatively inexpensive way to freshen up your porch. They’re also practical as they create a nice shade when the sun is high. The other cool thing you can do is add a few window boxes. These are very easy to make and you can use them to tie a color scheme on your porch.

DIY projects for your porch – Think vertically

We all know to go out and buy some chairs, but that’s not really designing a porch, is it? Think about the nicest looking porch you have seen. Did it have something on the walls? Probably yes. Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who didn’t think about this. In fact, this is one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to porch decorating. However, we’ve got you covered.

Buy outdoor curtains. Yes, these are real, and they are ideal for one of the DIY projects for your porch. They’ll give you shade and a design boost. And since every porch has a few vertical beams, you can hang them in many different ways. The other thing that you can add is a ceiling fan. In the south, this is pretty much a necessity in hot summer months. Just remember to coordinate the fan with your existing home. You don’t want it to stick out too much.

Make use of walls. As we already mentioned, you have a giant canvas in front of you, and it’s called a front wall. Of course, you shouldn’t paint on it, unless you’re an artsy person. But vertical planters and a custom wall plaque can really make a difference.

Make it cozy

Do you know how you want to make everything as productive as possible when remodeling your office? Well, the thing with a porch is that you want to make it cozy. You want it to feel like a living space, so it needs to be comfortable. Change the porch styles every season so it can stay stylish all year round, and you’ll get a little something to feel happy about.

Washable blankets are a great addition to a porch to keep you warm at cold nights and can be nice looking also. Oversized cushions also work great as they are extremely comfortable. And if you haven’t already, add a table. You always need a place to put your drink on and making a table can be another one of the great little DIY projects for your porch.
